Public Education Overview

The Omaha Fire Department’s Public Education Program is responsible for spreading the message of fire safety to individuals of all ages and from all walks of life. This mission is critical as often times the public’s first impression of the Department comes from a public education activity or presentation. Our goal is to take a proactive approach to raise awareness and educate the public on fire safety and how to protect their home, business, or family in the event of a fire or catastrophe. We take a community-prevention approach where we enlist the help of volunteer and community organizations to help promote our message.

Offered to pre-school children, 4-5 years of age to teach general fire safety techniques and what a firefighter looks like when completely dressed in fire fighting equipment.

Fire Safety Trailer

This trailer is designed to teach school age children and adults how to escape a fire in their home by using theatrical smoke inside a trailer to simulate a fire situation. The students then practice the escape by climbing out the window. The trailer is co-owned by Omaha Fire and the State Fire Marshal's office in Lincoln. The Omaha Fire Department schedules this event with the cooperation of local school districts.

The Omaha Fire Department Fire Safety Trailer Program is an exciting opportunity for kids of all ages to learn about home and fire safety in a “hands-on” presentation.

Examples of lessons taught are:
• Demonstrations of cooking safety
• Learn to crawl low in a smoke (theatrical smoke) charged room
• Escape Plans
• Much, much more!
